JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK & HIMALAYAN TRIP DETAILS

 

This region north east of Delhi is located in the slopes of the surrounding mountains. Nainital is a known birding area with over 250 species. Jim Corbett National Park and Rajaji are well known destinations. The former, also called “Tiger Park” contains a small population of wild tigers among many other wildlife. This park along with the neighbouring Rajaji Park contains a massive corridor where wild Elephants frequently pass through.

There is also a decent population of the Great Pied Hornbill which is our main target on this trip while in the Jim Corbett National Park. This amazing specie of the Hornbill migrates to the lower regions during December to late Spring to nest. During this tour the following bird species can be found: Blue-fronted Redstart, Brown-headed Barbets, Slaty-headed Parakeet, Plum-headed Parakeet, Crimson-fronted Barbet, Red-bellied Blue Magpie, Kingfishers, Golden-throated Barbet, Blue-throated Barbet, Lineated Barbet, Pied Woodpeckers, Brown-capped Pigmy, Grey-capped Pigmy Woodpecker, Asian Kingfisher, Rufus-bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-crowned Woodpecker, Himalayan Woodpecker Koklas Pheasants, Himalayan Griffon, Cheer Pheasants, Kalij pheasant, many species of Kingfishers, Babblers, Black Bulbul, the spectacular Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird and many others.

Our tour schedule is set out below:

DAY 1: DELHI – SATTAL

You will be picked up from your hotel or designated pick up location at 8:00 AM in Delhi by your tour leader. You should ensure that you had breakfast before the pick up as we will be driving north towards Sattal. We will be stopping frequently for sightseeing opportunities and we will have lunch on the way. On arrival we will check into our lodge and relax before we head out to the surrounding villages for some afternoon birding. Dinner will be at the lodge.

LODGE: Sattal Birding Lodge  

DAY 2: BIRDING SATTAL:

We will have an early breakfast and head out to the surrounding villages of Nainital for a full day of birding. We will return to our lodge for lunch, or depending on opportunities and the level of activity we may have lunch in a restaurant. We will return to the lodge for dinner.

LODGE: Sattal Birding Lodge

DAY 3: SATTAL – PANGOT FOREST

We will have breakfast and about 3 hours to search the trails around Sattal in the early morning before we drive to Pangot. We will have lunch along the way in a restaurant before arriving. We will check into our birding lodge in the afternoon and immediately head out for the trails around the Pangot Forest before returning for dinner around a campfire.

DAY 4: BIRDING THE PANGOT FOREST

We will have an early breakfast and head out to the surrounding villages and trails in the Pangot forest for a full day of birding and wildlife search. We will have box lunch for convenience and we will return to the lodge for dinner.

 DAY 5: PANGOT – BINSAR BIRDING LODGE

After an early breakfast and some early morning photography and birding we drive towards to the Binsar Santuary. We will have lunch along the way in a restaurant depending on the time we leave Pangot due to birding activities. On arrival, we will relax and then set out for some birding around the lodge in the afternoon. Dinner will be at the lodge.

 DAY 6: BINSAR FOREST

We will have an early breakfast and have a full day we will have breakfast very early and select one of the many trails in the Binsar forest searching for various species of birds. An alternative is to have packed breakfast with us. We will return to the lodge for lunch and relax in the afternoon period with the bird activity is quiet.
Later in the evening we will head for a different trail around the forest again and or in nearby villages. The trail we decide upon and the village we pass through will depend on recent sightings and activity information provided by villagers and contacts with other guides. At the end of each day we will return to the lodge for dinner.

LODGE: Binsar Birding Lodge 

DAY 7: BINSAR – CHOPTA

We will have breakfast very early in the morning and begin a long drive to Chopta. Although the drive is long, we will stop along the way for sightseeing and lunch. The scenery of the Himalayan mountains is simply spectacular. On arrival in Chopta, we will check into our lodge and relax for the evening. Dinner will be at the lodge 

LODGE: Magpie Camp & Resort 

DAYS 8-9: BIRDING CHOPTA

For the next two full days we will traverse the trails around this stunning region. Located in the untouched region of Uttarakhand, there will be lots of opportunities for photography of wildlife, birds and landscape. Here there is a great chance of viewing the Himalayan Monal. Each day we will have box lunch with us and return to our lodge for dinner.

DAY 10: CHOPTA – RANIKHET

After an early breakfast we will have another long drive back to Ranikhet. We will be stopping frequently along the way at strategic spots for photographic opportunities and the chance to view the Himlayan Monal. Lunch will be along the way and on arrival we will have dinner in the lodge.

DAY 11: BIRDING RANIKHET

This will be more of a relaxing day after a long drive from the Himalayan mountains of Chopta on our way back to the Jim Corbett National Park. We will have breakfast and utilize the trails and around the lakes of Ranikhet in search of the birds in this area. We will have lunch at our lodge and return to the trails around this area in the afternoon. Dinner will be in our lodge.

DAY 12: RANIKHET – JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

We will have breakfast and drive towards the Jim Corbett National Park. On arrival we will check into our lodge and visit the trails in the immediate surroundings. Dinner will be in our lodge.

DAYS 13, 14 & 15: EXPLORING JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK & SITABANI RESERVE

For the next three full days we will visit different areas of the park. We will spend full days in sections of the Jim Corbett National Park such as Dhikala and a full day in Bijarani. The area of the park we explore will be highly dependent on recent Elephant sightings. The Elephants move across the different regions within the park. Our guide will be depending on information from the Jim Corbett National Park as well as weather conditions to maximize our chances for seeing the herds of Elephants and opportunities for great photography. Each day we will return to our lodge for lunch and head back to the trails. On one of these days we will visit the Sitabani private reserve. This reserve is very famous with birders as the park boasts more than 650 species. Dinner will be at the lodge each night.

DAY 16: JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK – DELHI

After an early breakfast we will drive back to Delhi, stopping along the way for photography and scenic spots. Your tour ends on arrival in Delhi.

 


IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER

PLEASE NOTE: All individuals are responsible for checking VISA requirements and obtaining the necessary travel documentation for entering India prior to arriving.

FITNESS LEVEL: 

Most of the terrain is easy. However, where hiking is required even though it is considered easy to moderate, we strongly advise that moderate level of fitness be attained before embarking on this tour. Regular exercise prior to your trip is advisable. Remember you may be hiking and outdoors for long periods in some cases and although the pace will be very slow you may be carrying camera equipment, meals and water where applicable. To ensure your maximum enjoyment a moderate level of fitness is advisable.

AGE POLICY: 

If you are considering travelling with children and other family members, please note that this tour is open for individuals 15 yrs and older.

WHAT TO BRING:

Hat, camera and equipment, binoculars, sun block, rain jacket, hiking boots, fleece for colder nights and early morning, small back pack for box lunch and water, bug spray.

BAGGAGE:

This tour involves walking for long periods in different parks and moving frequently to a different lodge/camp. For flexibility and total enjoyment we will advise that luggage be limited to 2 suitcases and a small hand luggage.

CURRENCY:

The official currency in India is the Indian Rupee.
